Yesterday, a deadly aftershock of 6.8 magnitude shook Michoacan State, west of Mexico City, just three days after Monday’s 7.6 earthquake, which killed two and fell on the anniversary of two other Mexico earthquakes. In fact, both the 2022 and 2017 earthquakes happened not long after an alarm sounded as part of a ceremony held in memory of the 9,500 who died in the 1985 quake. The coincidence of three earthquakes falling on September 19 has gripped many Mexicans with fear, calling the day “cursed.”
Lord, we thank You for the lives that were spared this week. Please heal the injured and comfort those who mourn. As the country still trembles in the aftershock of so many earthquakes, gather each person up into Your arms and remind them You are good. That You are more powerful than an earthquake or a date or even a demon. Show them Your glory, Lord. Perform miracles and signs and wonders to draw all people to Yourself. Drive each person to their Bibles to look for You, and meet them on the pages. For those who have been deep in sin, draw them to repentance. Awaken Mexico. Compel both the lost and the saved to lay down everything they have run after that isn’t You and to seek You now with all their hearts. Tear down their idols, and set them free to surrender to Your love. Awaken the church to love You with such passion they will spread across the mountains into every village and town to share Your good news with the lost and plant churches. Protect and bless Christians so abundantly they will also bless others around them, demonstrating Your love and protection even as they share Your message of truth. Shine through them such love, joy and peace that everyone who meets them sees it and longs for it and asks them how they came by it, so the Christians will point to Jesus. Tear down the cartels, the drug and human trafficking rings. Arrest those involved in every kind of evil, and block them from those evil plans. Destroy hatred, pride, greed and self-seeking. Stop the kidnapping, extortion, violence and murder, and release those held prisoner for evil purposes. Give every heart in Mexico a hunger and thirst for You, and then satisfy them with the Living Waters of Your love. Psalm 42.
