Kenya’s Praying President

A village boy who grew up in a Protestant family, the first thing William Ruto did when confirmed by the Supreme Court as Kenya’s new president was to get down on his knees next to his wife Rachel and other leaders to pray.

More than 80 percent of Kenya’s population of 54 million profess Christianity. Of its 110 people groups, 33 are unreached with the gospel, including Muslims, Hindus and animists. While most of the surrounding African countries suffer from tremendous violence against Christians by Muslim extremists, the different religious communities of Kenya tend to coexist peacefully. In fact, several Muslim leaders supported Ruto in his campaign.

Ruto is Kenya’s first evangelical Christian president, and both he and his wife believe in the power of prayer. Let’s pray for him and for other Christians throughout the world God is leading to run for office in their own countries.

Lord, please be a Shield around President Ruto, sheltering him from attacks, illness and harm. Guide him in every decision and don’t let him be overtaken by opinions. But teach him to surrender every thought and decision over to You, and to lead others to do the same. Isaiah 55:8-9-13. Anoint him to bless his country and care for the people he serves. Give him wisdom as he appoints other government positions, and choose for him those who will follow You. Create a powerful team of prayer warriors that lead their nation into Your good purposes. Don’t let pride take Ruto over, but keep him humbly surrendered to You. Lead him to walk out in Proverbs 3:5-6, constantly seeking you in all his ways so You will direct his paths. Teach him how to not just make decisions, even if he thinks he knows what’s right, but to seek You first and listen for Your leading. Grant him and all those working together with him wisdom in all things. Protect their marriages. Protect their families. Protect all their relationships. Give Ruto favor with all people, even those who have opposed him. Grant Kenya a fruitful era of blessing, abundance and peace. Protect every Christian and seeker. Open up the way for Your good news to enter every heart and home of every unreached tribe. And multiply Your church all the more. Awaken Kenya. Send out missionaries who will go to the unreached both in that nation and in the nations all around them and open wide the door for them. Make peace and the blessings of Your favor on Kenya a beacon to the battling countries around them, so they will stop their terrorist acts and fall to their knees in reverence of the King of Kings.

Anoint and call out Christians throughout the world to run for public office in their own countries. Make every nation tired of the darkness, tired of the death, destruction, poverty, oppression, violence, corruption and all that is evil — so tired that they stop supporting those who perpetuate evil and look for a leader who will bless and care for their nation, bringing hope, freedom and salvation. Don’t let those You’ve called be discouraged, but carry them through to victory and beyond. Shield them from enemy attacks on their character, health or families. Where once there was darkness, now come, O Lord. Awaken the nations. Arise and shine upon them until every heart sees You are the One they long for.
