Venezuelans in Crisis

Since socialist Venezuela’s economic crisis began in 2014, nearly 7 million have fled their home country, mostly to neighboring nations, including almost 2.5 million to Colombia. Since November last year, receiving countries in Latin America and the Caribbean reported at least 753,000 Venezuelans crossing their borders, with about 635,000 entering Colombia. Many who wish to enter the US brave a dangerous trek through Central America’s Darien Gap on the border of Colombia and Panama through a thick jungle with rushing rivers and dangerous wildlife and thieves. Last year, about 3,000 attempted the journey, but this year that number has risen to more than 45,000.

Lord, please have mercy on the millions of Venezuelans having trouble finding food and basic services in their home country, and those who are unemployed or whose salaries are too low to feed their families. Protect the vulnerable, the children, the women, the sick and the lame. Be a Shield around them, keeping them from harm, starvation or abuse. Raise up churches and pastors and Christian families who will take in those who are in need and care for them. Multiply their supplies so miraculously they will have more than enough food to feed the hungry, clean water for the thirsty, and even well-paying jobs for those who have been without. Heal the sick. Open the eyes of the blind. Restore the strength of those who are weary. And accompany every miracle with a wide demonstration of Your love.

Please move among those in government, giving them wisdom to know how to help their people, and raise up leaders with courage to do what is right. Surround them with Christians who will pray for them and lead them into Your arms, so they will acknowledge You alone as King and set out to obey Your loving plans for that country.

As refugees attempt long, dangerous trips on foot to seek food and a better way of life, guide them to safety. When they cry out to You, answer them, O God, in a way that they know it is You. Raise up Christians in every country along the way and provide abundant resources for them, so they can offer food, housing and other provisions to those in need, but especially the gospel. Flow Your love through them in such abounding measures that those who see their smiles and hear Your name spoken will open their hearts wide to receive You as Savior.

Awaken Venezuela and all of Latin America to You, O Lord. Use this time of difficulty to bring forth great good, with millions coming to faith in You and thousands of churches planted. May Venezuela see Your glory rising over their country like the sun, as You draw them out of darkness into Your light. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
