Strength to Overcome

In what ways have you felt like a failure lately? Like you’ve missed the mark? Or don’t measure up? Is there an area of your life where you keep messing up, even when you know what you should be doing and actually want to do what is right?

“I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing…. Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!”

Romans 7:18-25 NIV

Lord, thank You because You knew I was going to mess up long before I ever did, and You have a plan. Forgive me, Father, for the times when I don’t do the things I know You’re asking me to do and I give into my flesh instead. I know that my will isn’t strong enough to defeat Satan’s purposes for my life. I need Someone stronger. Please, come rescue me and set me free from my strongholds. Show me the lies I’ve believed in that carry me away from Your truth and lead me down deadly paths. Draw me back into the abundant life You created me for, Jesus. John 10:10. I want to live for You. You have promised in Your Word that nothing is impossible for You. This problem I have, it’s not too big for You to save me, so please, Lord, show me when this reaction/sin/attitude/thought process first entered my life, and the lies that the enemy planted in my heart when that happened. Then show me, Jesus, where You were when that happened. What were You saying? What were You doing? When You look at me now, what do You see? Teach me how to walk out in the truth of what Your Word says about me. I may feel like I’m not all that. But You, Christ, are perfect, and You live in me. Through Your sacrifice, You have also made me perfect, even as You are now making me holy. Hebrews 10:14. You promise me I can do all things through Your strength. Philippians 4:13, Ephesians 6:10-12. Rise up within me, O God, and defeat my lies, my flesh, my selfish desires, my need to defend myself. You alone are my Protector. When I try to take Your job from You, I only leave myself wide open to all the more enemy attacks. Show me how to come back under Your covering, seek You in all my ways (Proverbs 3:5-6), and walk out in Your Word such that the truth I know becomes the truth I live. In Your name. Amen.
