What has been keeping you from greater oneness with Christ? Do you know?
All of us have barriers we’ve allowed the enemy to put up against experiencing in the fullness of Christ. But sometimes we don’t recognize those strongholds because they feel “normal” to us. The enemy has whitewashed them with lies that can even sound “righteous,” as if we’re agreeing with God. He wants to paint our sin so pretty we overlook it.
- “I’m not judging. I’m just telling it like it is.”
- “Well, she really should.…”
- “He deserved it.”
- “I don’t mean to talk behind her back, but …, so you’ll pray for her, of course.”
- “I’m right. You’re wrong.”
- “Everyone struggles with that.”
- “The Bible says….”
Such camouflage is especially useful in hiding strongholds like slander, spiritual pride, judgment, legalism, accusation, self-righteousness, gossip, and pride.
Lord, show us the excuses we’ve been using to cover up our sin. Remind us that Your one command is to love. Matthew 22:37-40. No matter how “righteous” I feel in my point of view, if You, the God whose name is Love, are not leading me, then I am but a clanging symbol. 1 Corinthians 13. Forgive me, Lord, for judging my neighbor, for accusing without first seeking Your viewpoint. Only You know what is in a heart. Please help me see others through Your eyes. Wash away the whitewash I’ve allowed to paint my sin “pretty,” and show me my strongholds for what they truly are. Set me free, O God, from the plots the enemy has had on me, the ways he’s been using me to hurt others. Help me see my sin through Your eyes and be so repulsed by it, I never return to it again.
