Whole houses floated down the street, uplifted from their foundations by flash floods after heavy rainfall Tuesday in Buchanan County, a mountainous region of southwest Virginia. As of yesterday morning, at least 44 people were still unaccounted for, but by midday all had been found alive, praise God, although one suffered a snake bite. At least 100 homes washed away in the floods.
Less than a year ago, this area suffered tragic flooding, including one death, due to the remnants of Hurricane Ida. Now, they are devastated once again.
Lord, thank You for saving lives. Please comfort those who are mourning, in shock or afraid. Guide them to their Bibles and urge them to look to You for strength, hope and answers. Deepen the faith of Christians and use them to reach out to lost neighbors. For those whose homes have been destroyed, please provide for their needs and draw them up into Your arms. Multiply Christians’ resources so they can abundantly bless others. Use them to share Your love and good news with those who have lost hope. Press within each heart a deep hunger for the things that matter most. When they cry out to You, answer them so clearly they will know it is You. Arrange abundant gifts for the community — clothes, food, furniture, clean water, appliances, whatever they need — as well as Christian counselors, construction workers, electricians, handymen and others to join You in rebuilding lives and homes. Please, Lord, draw all the more people into Your Kingdom. Remind them of what this life is for, not for things but for loving You and loving others through Your love. Give them comfort each time they turn to You, and guide them through this difficult time straight into Your arms.
