At least 19 have died and numerous others are injured after two mass shootings Saturday night in South Africa. The first occurred in a tavern in a semi-rural area of Pietermaritzburg, where four died. Then four hours later, in a bar about 500 km north in Soweto, 15 were fatally shot. All this occurred just two weeks after 22 teens were found dead in a bar in South Africa’s East London.
Although the gospel is available to South Africans, thousands of satanists and eight unreached Hindu, Muslim, and Jewish people groups are still in great need of Christ. About two months ago, because of unconditional love shown by Christians, a satanic leader met Jesus and resigned his position in South Africa. Let’s pray the Lord will do all the more, awakening the whole nation to His love and salvation.
Lord, we ask You for the million or more people in South Africa who most desperately need Your love. Give them a hunger for You so deep they will seek You with all their hearts and find You. Bring loving Christians to them to show them how high and deep Your unfailing love and grace go. Empower them to share Your good news in a way the lost will easily understand. Lift the veil from the eyes of those who have been blinded by religions that do not lead them to Christ, and open their minds and hearts to see You as You truly are and receive You as Lord.
We also ask You, Father, for the gunmen who killed so many this weekend and others who are planning evil acts. Break the chains that bind them to satan’s plans. Bust through their walls and flood their darkness with Your light. Meet them in their dreams. Talk to them throughout the day. Make them come face-to-face with the Living God, so they will drop their weapons in fear of the Lord, and choose Your Word as their sword, and faith in Christ as their shield. Ephesians 6:10-20.
Crush the enemy’s plans, Lord, and bring forth a mighty movement of Your Spirit all across South Africa, awakening churches to spread Your gospel and rapidly multiply. Let the news of Riaan’s encounter with You run like wildfire among those in the satanist movement, dismantling it and sparking hope in every heart that they, too, can find a way out. That Your arm is not too short to save those who have fallen so far from grace. That they, too, can know Love and find peace. Give them a craving for freedom so fierce they will turn from their wicked rituals and cry out to You to save them. Then answer them, Lord, in such powerful, miraculous ways, they leave evil and cling to Christ. Break every curse. Foil every plan for evil. Destroy every lie with Your truth. And set the captives free to know You so personally they are transformed forever by Your love, truth and mercy.
Awaken Your church in South Africa to love all the more, Lord. Break those who profess Christianity free from strongholds of pride, religion, apathy, judgment, busyness, lust, anger, hatred, depression, anxiety, doubt, addictions and anything else that keeps them from intimate relationship with You. For those who live along the fringes of faith, busy with selfish endeavors, only sometimes thinking of You or going to church, meet them in powerfully personal ways to draw them into deep depths with You. Lead them into loving churches grounded in Truth. Bring to them strong Christian friends who will help them through the hard times and show them what it means to rest in Your arms. Raise up a chosen generation of youth on fire for You who will lead South Africa into revival throughout the coming years. May Your kingdom spread all throughout the country and beyond, as people sing Your praises from shore to shore, trading in weapons and terror for praise of the Living God.
For those mourning loved ones who have died this past month, wipe their tears by Your tender touch. Let them feel You near them. When they cry out to You, answer them and comfort them. If they do not yet know You, draw them to Yourself to be saved. And for those who do know You, empower them to shine Your love and peace in the midst of this crisis, comforting others and drawing them into Your arms. In Your name, Jesus. Amen.
