Around 300 Amharas died in a mass shooting by Oromo terrorists near the town of Gimbi in the Oromia region of western Ethiopia on Saturday. The Oromo people are mainly Muslim, and the Amhara mainly Ethiopian Orthodox.
Due to Islamic extremists, political violence, and denominational protectionism, Ethiopia is listed among the most dangerous countries for Christians. Drought and plagues have only added to their troubles.
O Lord God, please have mercy on the Amharas and all the peoples of Ethiopia. Put an end to prejudice, hatred, violence and terrorism. March in Your angel armies to fight for the innocent and rescue children’s futures. Bring terrorists to their knees before You in repentance and surrender. Open their eyes to see Your angels blocking their way, and strike them with such fear of You they will drop their weapons and choose Love instead. Give every Oromo such a deep hunger for You they will abandon their wars to seek You with all their hearts and find You. Every time an Oromo comes to You, O God, fill them with such joy, peace and love all will see the difference and be amazed. Abundantly bless both Oromo and Amhara Christian families, so they will also abundantly bless their lost neighbors. Fill violent criminals with remorse over atrocities, and awaken their hearts to You, O God.
Wrap Your arms around Amharas who are grieving the deaths of their loved ones. Heal those who are injured. Comfort those who are afraid. Rebuild their homes in the location You desire. Provide for all their needs. Rescue them from nightmares. Reach into their memories and show them where You are and what You’re saying. Give them courage to forgive their persecutors. When they cry out to You, answer them, O God. Meet them in powerful ways to draw them to Yourself and save those who do not yet know You personally. Take them on a journey to safety and deeper depths of love and freedom. For those who are nominal Christians or who don’t know how to walk in oneness with You, disciple them, Jesus. Walk alongside them, guide them, lead them from within. Tear down every lie they believe that stands in the way of more of You, and set them free to rise up without fear and live the purpose You created them for. Matthew 22:37-40.
We pray Romans 12:9-21 for every Amhara now, Lord. Awaken their hearts to Your touch, and step them into oneness with You, sincere in love. Move them to hate what is evil and cling to what is good, devoted to one another in love, honoring others above themselves, and never lacking in zeal, but keeping their spiritual fervor serving You. By Your Spirit, empower Amharas to be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer. Bless them abundantly by Your mighty hand and open their hearts to practice hospitality and share with those who are in need. Give them strength and courage to bless those who persecute them, not curse. To rejoice with those who rejoice, and mourn with those who mourn. Set them free from pride, so they will live in harmony with one another, willing to associate with people of low position, not repaying evil for evil, but being careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone and live at peace. You have said, “It is Mine to avenge; I will repay.” Set the persecuted free to forgive, to even offer food and water to their persecutors. Don’t let evil overcome them, but overcome evil with good. In Jesus’ glorious name. Amen.
