This World Refugee Day marks a tragic milestone. For the first time in history, more than 100 million people — a shocking 1 in 78 — across the globe have had to flee their homes due to violence or persecution. This includes more than 27.1 million refugees and 4.6 million asylum seekers. Afghanistan’s fall, the wars in Ukraine and Yemen, and other conflicts in Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan, and the Syrian Arab Republic have all contributed to such grim numbers. Let’s pray.
Lord, please have mercy on every one of these millions who have no home. Rescue them from danger and protect them from thieves, abusers and traffickers who would seek to take advantage of their difficult circumstances. By Your bountiful hand, provide them with food, water, shelter, medicine, counseling and every other need in such a way they will know it is You. Bring families back together that have been separated. Heal their wounds, both of the body and of the heart or mind. Lead them to safe dwelling places, where they will be loved and cared for. Place them under the covering of Christian families and churches who will show them compassion, abundantly help them with their needs, and lead them to You. For only You can heal the pain of their tragic memories and give them peace.
Present the Good News of Christ to each displaced person in such a way they can easily understand. Give them a hunger for Your love. Tear down every wall. And draw them up into Your arms to be saved. Yours forevermore. Not abandoned, but beloved. Adopted sons and daughters of the Most High God. When they cry out to You for help, answer them.
Wherever Christians have been persecuted, let them feel Your presence with them giving them courage, faith and grace to forgive. Anoint them to boldly speak Your message of truth and salvation to their oppressors and to others around them who have been oppressed, leading many to You. Bring violent offenders to their knees in repentance and surrender to Your love. Haunt their dreams with Your presence and Your open invitation to salvation, until they admit their wrongdoing, feel repulsed by their evil deeds, and desperately seek Your forgiveness and mercy.
End the wars, O Sovereign God. Stop the persecution. By Your grace, change the face of the world forever. Let mercy rain down, and salvation spring up from the ground. Save us from the evil one and awaken this broken world to Your healing love, O God of All.
