As missionaries raising our children in one of the most dangerous countries in the world, we are often asked, “Aren’t you afraid?”
At first, yes; very, in fact. But then, through heavy trials and spiritual warfare, the Lord cast out fear with His perfect love. 1 John 4:18. Not only did He carry us through grief and danger, but He gave us a front-row seat to His miracles.
Praise God I will never be the same again.
The harder the hardship, the deeper I dove into His arms. I learned to recognize lies that rose to the surface in me, and hand them to the Lord so He could set me free. Truth tore down my strongholds, filling me with faith, hope, love, joy and peace instead. With the barriers gone, I could hear God’s voice clearer and obey Him quicker, becoming a channel for His love and power to flow through to others.
Truth:
- No matter what evil the enemy engages in, God is still sovereign. Matthew 19:26, Psalm 77:14.
- He already has a plan, and it is good, because He is good. Proverbs 3:5-6.
- He loves me. 1 John 3:1, 4:10-16.
- He fights for me. Exodus 14:14.
- He has already won the battle. Romans 8:33-39.
- Through His power and protection, I conquer too. Ephesians 6:10-18.
Winning the battle may not look the way I think it should. 1 Peter 4:12-19. But as I continue to pray and listen to God, He answers my prayers and shows me what He’s doing so I can follow Him there.
If I can’t yet see what God’s doing in my situation, then I purpose to do the opposite of what I see my enemy doing. Instead of anger, I choose love. Instead of vengeance, I choose to forgive. Instead of anxiety, I pray in faith, trusting in God’s promises to hear and answer. Philippians 4:4-7, John 15:7.
I move toward the Lord, never away. I know He is my only way out. If I give in to the enemy’s purposes, my trial will last longer. But the more I pray God’s purposes and step out in obedience to His leading, the more ground my enemy loses and the quicker he is likely to end his attack.
Our best offensive strategy against the enemy is always prayer. Ephesians 6: 10-20.
Today, let’s pray for those who face persecution and trials. Ask God to
- Hear their cries and answer them.
- Be a Shield around them and keep them from harm.
- Give them wisdom in each circumstance.
- Surround them with His angels, hiding them from evildoers.
- Fill them with faith, hope, love and courage.
- Strengthen, comfort and encourage them.
- Show them whatever lies they believe that make hardships harder.
- Set them free with His truth.
- Empower them to forgive.
- Give them courage to boldly share His love, even with those who persecute them.
2 “The time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God. 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or Me. 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember that I warned you about them. 33 I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.“
Jesus, John 16 NIV
