Deadly Stampede in Nigeria

On Saturday, Christians from the Kings Assembly Pentecostal Church in Rivers State, Nigeria, set out to offer hope to their community by hosting a charity event with free clothing, shoes and other items. People began arriving before dawn to secure their place in line, but before the gates opened at 9 a.m., the crowd broke through, killing 31 in the stampede, including many children and a pregnant mother. Relatives of the victims then turned on church members, attacking and injuring them.

More than 80 million people live in extreme poverty in Nigeria, which rates seventh on the list of the 50 most dangerous countries for Christians. Although nearly half of Nigeria’s population identifies itself as followers of Christ, they face constant terror because of Islamic terrorist raids. In fact, last year, of the 6,000 Christians martyred for their faith worldwide, 4,650 of those were in Nigeria.

Lord, please heal the wounded by Your miraculous hand. Wrap Your arms around those who mourn and comfort them. Give them hope in the midst of their sorrow. In the face of hatred and blame, demonstrate such love, mercy and forgiveness through Christians that the whole community will be touched by You through this terrible tragedy and lives will be saved for all eternity. Be a Shield of protection around every believer, Lord. Surround them with Your angels and give them favor, especially as emotions still run high in the community and officials investigate the event. Cast out terror with Your unfailing love, and empower Christians to boldly share the Gospel with those who are hurting. Give every lost heart a hunger for Your love, blessing, shelter and protection. Perform signs and miracles and wonders by Your mighty hand, so that the veil will be lifted from the eyes of those who have fought against You and hundreds, even thousands will be saved. What the enemy meant for great harm, Lord, please turn it around for great good. Bring forth a Great Awakening to You in every heart, home, village and state all across Nigeria and beyond.
