Prayers for Cuba

In an explosion Friday at Havana’s historic Hotel Saratoga (featured photo), at least 27 people died and dozens were injured.

Due to increased restrictions on churches by the ruling Communist Party, Cuba jumped from just off the top 50 most dangerous place for Christians (right at 51) last year to number 37 in 2022.

“Christian leaders are often summoned by government officials for questioning or held for up to 48 hours to pressure them, and churches are demolished by hired gangs so the government can deny responsibility. Legal church buildings are seized, and no new church buildings have been legally built in the country since the revolution. Many believers meet in illegal house churches, often extensions of the pastor’s home or shaded structures in the backyard of a family’s home. Churches continue to grow through active evangelistic activity, but some believers have never owned a Bible because of government oppression.”

Voice of the Martyrs

Those who protest, criticize or report abuses by the government are severely punished. Many detainees in the over-crowded prisons are held without fair trial in extended solitary confinement, subject to beatings and denied medical care.

According to Voice of the Martyrs, “Most (of the 11.5 million) Cubans are atheists. A significant number of Cubans engage in superstitious and spiritist practices, including the Afro-Cuban religion of Santeria. Eleven percent are evangelical Christians.”

Let’s pray …

  • For a great awakening to Christ’s love in the heart of every person in Cuba.
  • Rescue for those still trapped in the hotel ruins.
  • For those who are injured or grieving, that God will draw near to them in tangible ways, comfort them with His love, and point them the way to salvation.
  • For Bibles to make it into the hands of every seeker and Christian who needs one.
  • For protection over churches, pastors and every Christian and their families.
  • For all barriers against the knowledge of Christ to come down, so every person in Cuba will have the opportunity to hear the Good News in a clear way and be saved.
  • For the veil to be lifted from the eyes of the lost, so they will see Christ for who He truly is and hunger for His love and grace.
  • For those captive to evil spirits to be set free and find salvation in Christ.
  • For comfort to those in prison, that God will meet them in powerful ways and show them His love; for revival to sweep through the prisons, bringing hundreds to faith.
  • For those in government, gang leaders, prison wardens, and other oppressive or violent persecutors and abusers to have a personal encounter with the Living God that brings them to their knees in repentance and fear of the Lord, so they will be saved and bless rather than oppress.
  • For freedom of religion and for easy ways for Christians to connect and freely worship.
  • For Christians to boldly shine Christ’s love to their neighbors and others You bring into their path; for Your Spirit to flow through them in such a way that others are drawn to Your light like moths to a flame.
