Prayers for Korea

As wildfires raged across 15,000 acres in South Korea yesterday, threatening a nuclear power plant in Uljin, and 6,200 people fled their homes, North Korea launched yet another missile into the East Sea (their 9th this year) just days before South Korea’s impending presidential election (March 9).

South Korean churches sent out their first 24 missionaries in 1974. Within 40 years, that number grew to 27,436. Today, South Korea is the second largest Christian missionary-sending country in the world (surpassed only by the US) with over 20,000 missionaries currently serving in 171 countries worldwide.

Meanwhile, their immediate neighbor, North Korea, is the second most dangerous country in the world (surpassed only by Afghanistan), where Christians are severely persecuted and martyred for their faith.

Lord, we praise You for the many Christians who faithfully love and serve You in South Korea and abroad, and for all the millions of people from hundreds of tribes and languages who have come to know You through their witness. Please protect Korean missionaries in every country where they serve, and give them favor with those governments and the people they share Christ with, empowering them through Your Holy Spirit to plant and grow churches by the thousands. Grow Your church also in South Korea. May every Christian be known by their love and respected for their faith. Shield South Korea from harm, especially by their Communist neighbors to the north and west, and give their leaders wisdom in all decisions. Guide the upcoming elections, Lord, and bring forth Your purposes. As families mourn homes and businesses lost in the fire, mobilize believers to offer shelter, provisions, and hope with a clear demonstration of Your love and grace as they share the Good News. Bless Christians abundantly so they can also abundantly bless others. Provide the way of escape for Christians imprisoned in North Korea, and bring a quick end to the tyranny there. Open the borders so the Gospel can freely flow across, and then spread it like wildfire, setting prisoners of darkness free by Your light. Awaken every heart to You, O Lord. Press a hunger for You into every heart and home in both Koreas and all throughout that region. When anyone cries out to You, O God, answer them. May all of East Asia see Your goodness, hear Your Good News, turn to You and be saved.
