At least 117 people have died and more than 100 are still missing after heavy flooding and landslides in the mountain city of Petrópolis, north of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this week. With a forecast of torrential rain and thunderstorms over the next few days, yet more flooding is expected, bringing rescues to a halt, as people flee for safety.
In January, more than 28,000 people were displaced from their homes due to floods in southeastern Brazil, and yet more flooding later struck São Paulo, leaving about 600 families homeless. Let’s pray for the thousands who are suffering after so much devastation.
Lord, please, lift the rain, dry up the floods, protect and rescue those who are still alive, and perform miracles by Your mighty hand to show Your great mercy and love. When people cry out to You, hear them, O God, and answer them. Provide for their needs, comfort those who mourn, heal the hurting, rebuild homes and lives, and do it all in such a way that they will know You are the One who has done that. Pour out Your love in abundant ways over all who are suffering, Lord. Rise up to show Yourself as their Hope, their Refuge, their Comfort, their Strength, their Provider, their Salvation. Give them a hunger for You that is so fierce, they will seek out churches and Christians to tell them Your Good News so they can be saved, and so those who have backslidden will return to You. Whatever they were holding onto that now is gone, rise up in that place and be for them the only One they need. Bring Christians into their path to show them kindness and love. Put Bibles in their hands, and point them to the passages that will go straight to their hearts, toppling lies with truth and setting them free to live for You. Through loving Christians, provide a roof over their heads, comfortable beds, clothing, food, water, electricity. But most of all, awaken them to Your love, O God. Replace the death and devastation with new, abundant life. John 10:10.
