Starvation and Conflict in Tigray

Thousands are dead, two million people have been forced from their homes, and famine and starvation now plague parts of Ethiopia after more than a year of conflict, mostly in the northern region of Tigray, which has been pressed from both sides by Ethiopian and Eritrean forces.

The Tigray people trace their origins back to Shem. They are said to have practiced pagan Egyptian religion until Solomon converted the queen of one of their kingdoms, Sheba, to Judaism. Coptic missionaries later brought Christianity to Tigray, and Islam entered by other means. Today, most Tigray people are Ethiopian Orthodox, while a small minority are Sunni/Sufi Muslim. During the current war in their region, both Muslim and Orthodox churches have been attacked and looted in Tigray, and many religious leaders and followers have been slaughtered.

Lord, please have mercy on the people of Tigray. So many are starving, homeless and grieving the brutal deaths of loved ones. Young women and girls face sexual assault or worse. Protect them, please, and heal their wounded hearts and bodies. Stop the oppression, abuse and bloodshed, O Lord, and rescue the people. Set them free, not only from those who persecute them for ethnic reasons, but also from the chains the enemy has used to bind them to religion and tradition without a deep, meaningful relationship with Christ. Show them who You are, Jesus. Meet them in their dreams and throughout the day in visions. Speak to them in powerful ways. Perform signs and miracles and wonders to point them to You. Bring true believers to them to tell them Your Good News in a way they can easily understand, to explain Scripture and to love them into Your arms. Give the peoples of Ethiopia a hunger for You. Bring them out of darkness and into Your Light. May they worship You, the One True God, in spirit and in truth. Awaken the people to You, O God. Cause those who persecute to lay down their weapons of war and surrender to the Prince of Peace.
