What does it look like to walk in the Spirit? Galatians 5:16, 25. I’m still learning and growing in this area, but one habit that has helped greatly to position me for more of His flow is to make Jesus my first thought. Before I open my eyes. Before I get out of bed. Before I think about anything else, I greet my King and hand Him my day: “Lord, what do You want to do today? I want to do that with You.”
I like to leave that question open before Him as I go into my quiet time with Him, and then as I step on out into the day. Sometimes, He’ll give me a verse from His heart as a theme for the day, or show me an opportunity to share His love with someone. Other times, He shifts my plans around so I’m doing what He’s doing. Proverbs 3:5-6, John 5:19.
Throughout the day, I’ll ask, “Lord, what are You doing in this situation and how can I join You there?” If I lean on my own understanding without seeking Him as I work, as I parent, as I respond to those around me, as I spend my time on whatever I want to (or someone else wants me to), I’ll miss the greater things — the heavenly things — He’s wanting to do amidst my earthly circumstances.
Like the time I planned on going to one store, but He led me to another so I could share His love with a woman in need. Or the time I’d already told my son, “No,” and then remembered to ask the Lord. Watching me stop in the middle of my verdict, pray, and then apologize because the Lord showed me I was wrong and my nine-year-old was right built his faith dramatically and he also began asking God before making decisions.
Decisions we think are little turn can turn into something life-changing for us or someone else when we hand them to the Lord and surrender to do things His way.
What can you do to position your heart so that your every moment becomes His? Ask Him today, and then purpose to do that.
