Show Me Your Name

Asking God a question first thing in the morning and then looking and listening for His answer throughout the day has been an exciting way for me to grow in my faith and walk with Christ.

A favorite morning conversation starter is to ask Jesus to reveal to me more about who He is through one of His names. For example, “Lord, please show me what it means that You are my Advocate.” (1 John 2:1)

Then, throughout the day, I watch and listen for His answer. He might show me a verse, remind me of a situation in my life where He did that, bring to my attention a line in a song or in something someone says, or just step out and be that beautiful name in living color right in front of me.

Today, I feel Him encouraging us to get to know Him deeper through His names. Close your eyes, and ask the Lord which name He wants to reveal all the more to you today. Then look for Him throughout the day to be that name for you. Don’t worry if you’re not sure what He’s showing you. Just keep that question before Him. He may want to walk you through several experiences over the next few days or weeks to reveal that name all the deeper. Write down in your journal what He shows you.

My daughter uses the Names of God Prayer Journal to do this. She has given me permission to share one of her journal entries with you here, so you can get an idea:

“‘Blessed be the Lord, my Rock, who TRAINS my hands for war, and my fingers for battle; He is my Stronghold and my Deliverer, my Shield and He in Whom I take Refuge, who subdues peoples under me.’ Psalm 144:2.

God, You have delivered the world from sin, the ultimate act of deliverance. Israel thought that their Deliverer would come to rescue them out of the hands of the nations, but You did even more! You banished ungodliness (Romans 11:26). You took away our sins. And that same grace that saved us now TRAINS us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions (Titus 2:11-14) as we wait for You to return. Praise God! For You don’t leave us to fend for ourselves, but You’re always by our side, and even invite us in to fight together as one with You!”
